While cocoa powder and cacao powder may look and taste similar, their nutrient profile is very different. Cocoa powder commonly used in most food products has been “Dutch processed” which means it has been treated with an alkalinizing chemical to reduce the intensity of flavour and acidity. However, this processing results in a 60-90% loss of antioxidants as one study found.

Cacao powder and nibs are different than cocoa powder since they are completely unprocessed with no additives. Cacao nibs are simply the edible flesh inside the cocoa bean. These nibs are ground to produce cacao powder, often at low temperature, to retain many of the antioxidants and nutrients (like magnesium and iron).

Raspberries have been shown to help manage weight and obesity by increasing metabolism in our fat cells and contain many phytonutrients known to help prevent cancer and reduce inflammation. A recent study also found that organic raspberries contained significantly higher amounts of antioxidants than non-organic, so it may be worth it to buy organic. Our bodies work so hard to keep us going all day, it’s time we showed them a little love too!

Ingredients (serves 1):

  • 1 banana
  • 1 cup almond or coconut milk
  • 1 tbsp. cacao powder
  • 1 scoop vegan vanilla protein powder
  • 1 handful of spinach
  • 2 tbsp. ground flax or chia
  • 1/2 cup fresh or frozen organic raspberries
  • 1 tbsp cacao nibs

Method:

  1. Blend all of the above ingredients using a hand-held immersion blender or a regular blender (for a smoother texture).
  2. Garnish with cacao nibs and a single raspberry (I was in a hurry so mine was frozen, as you can tell from the frost). 🙂

Treat yourself to dessert at breakfast. It’s an awesome way to begin your day! 🙂
